The red zebra or Maylandia estherae is commonly found in Lake Malawi, the Eastern side of Africa.

Along with the other twelve species of cichlids, they belong to a group called Mbunas. In local African language, this word means “rock-dwelling” or “rockfish”.

This refers to the habitat where the fish live, which is different from another type of cichlids that swim in open water.

There is also one famous red zebra fish farming in Florida.

Red Zebra Cichlid Care

If you ask about the feeding, there is nothing to worry about. As long as you give the proper food within the schedule, the fish would survive well.

Moreover, they are nowhere near picky eaters. Soon after you feed the new food, they will quickly adapt.

The real challenge would be the aggressiveness. Compared to the other fish in Mbuna group, red zebras are mid aggressive.

In the wild, male has bright blue bodies, while the female ranges between brownish beige to orange red color.
